STAR sex worker organizing group in Skopje, Macedonia

STAR, an activist group working on sex worker issues, has been doing amazing work in what has been just more than a year since it was formed. I had the pleasure of meeting Borce, one of the STAR organizers, editor of a newsletter about sex workers, and tireless advocate.

Last year, year for the International Day to End Violence against Sex Workers, they circulated a petition about sex worker rights, and on the steps of Macedonian Parliament, opened red umbrellas (the international symbol for sex worker rights).

This year they described beautifully big plans for the holiday. They have been hard at work, also with HOPS, to create materials for this year’s event. I don’t want to spill the beans ahead of time, so I am not going to go into too much detail, but they have posters, e-cards, and flyers with the declaration of the rights of sex workers. They also have performances and art that are being created, and are planning for a big party to celebrate sex workers in all their sparkly glory!

It sounds like quite the massive campagin to raise awareness about sex workers and their rights, and to address the overwhelming stigma against them. It was truly an inspiration to hear about all the things they are planning…We might just have to borrow some of their ideas in San Francisco!

STAR works in a coalition with HOPS, an LGBT group, youth service groups, and a group for drug users. They are working on a large resource database, as well as reports.
